News Story-Swine Flu

In the news recently we have heard a lot about a new strain of influenza known as H1-N1, or more commonly as swine flu. We started hearing about the outbreak in Mexico and in only a few days the disease had made its way into the United States. The swine flu has similar symptoms to the regular flu virus. Some schools throughout the country closed their doors in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus to their students when cases were found in their area.
As of May 8th, 2009, there are a confirmed 18 cases of swine flu among residents in Minnesota. 16 of the cases have occured in the Twin Cities and all reported cases have been mild. No deaths have occured yet from the H1N1 virus in the state and only 2 deaths in the country as a whole.
Different people have different outlooks on the swine flu outbreak as of late. When asked, Maison Davis, a student of Eastview, stated “I’m not worried about the flu. It comes around every year and this one is just a bit different. Nothing to get worked up about.” Most of those I interviewed had similar outlooks. “Our country will develop something to treat the disease if it gets too out of hand” stated Eastview parent Roger White.
